Bounce rate is an internet marketing and analysis term. It is denoted by the ratio of visitors who enter the site and “bounce” or leave the site instead of  viewing other pages within the same site.

High bounce rates can kill your blog while low ones will make you a blogging superstar! (excuse the exaggeration)

How does it Bounce rate work?

They would say visit the first page, also called the landing page of your website. Then they would check out how it looks, hunts for any content that would catch their attention. If they find something interesting, they will explore your site. If they are not impressed, they will leave or ‘bounce’.

The Secret Formula to Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is calculated thus,

{R_b} {{=}} left ( frac{T_v}{T_e} right )

where

  • Rb = Bounce rate
  • Tv = Total number of visitors viewing one page only
  • Te = Total entries to page

A visitor may bounce by:

  • Clicking on a link to a page on a different web site
  • Closing an open window or tab
  • Typing a new URL
  • Clicking the “Back” button to leave the site
  • Session timeout

Updated more accurate measure of bounce rate is:

Bounce Rate = Total Number of Visits Viewing One Page Divided by Total Number of Visits Greater Than or Equal to the Average Variable Page Load Speed.

  • Rb = Bounce rate
  • Tv = Total number of visits viewing one page only
  • Te = Total entries to page
  • Ps = Average Variable Page Load Speed

{R_b} {{=}} left ( frac{T_v}{T_e} right ) ≤ Ps

In either case, as you can see from the equation, it is important to reduce the total number of visits viewing one page only. You can do a number of things to ensure people don’t bounce off you site, but more about that later.

How to check the Bounce rate of website?

You need to go to Google Analytics. Now check out the Menu. Go to visitors. Then to Bounce Rate. You will get it there.

Why high Bounce rate hurts your website?

High bounce rate means more people are leaving your site. You may need to optimize your landing page for instance. But lower Bounce rate will allow higher clicks. That will in turn improve the relevance and indirectly reputation of your website. So this is another SEO term that you now know well about. So now reduce those bounce rates and retain viewers to your site. 🙂
